Poem for my Dominican Brother Who Hates His Haitian Brother (or Poem for My Black Brother Who Lives in Denial)

2 brothers on one island,
Hated each other
with a pathological zeal
one spoke Spanish,
the other spoke French –
different fathers,
but the same mother
whose language
they would never understand. The sugar cane shuddered
& wondered
if the boys
had ever been
to Israel
or
Palestine.

  1. noonsnewsm says:

Colonialism has done a number. When I first went to Haiti its paradox was there but elegance remained. Years later I visited its neighbor and yes something was confirmed for me about the Conquistadors macabre hatred.Mizan Kirby
